Beaumont Theater

Wole Soyinka wrote an extraordinary modern-day tragedy incorporating music and dance. Based on actual events which took place in 1946, the play's tragic course is set when a Nigerian tribal king's horseman, bound by custom to commit suicide upon the death of his chief, is restrained by a British colonial officer seeking to impose Western ideas upon local practices. This was the play's New York premiere and Mr. Soyinka made a rare U.S. appearance to direct his work.
